The High Court has observed the importance of launching a public campaign against deceitful e-commerce to protect the interest of consumers and rein in such deceitful incidents in the country.

The High Court bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mustafizur Rahman observed this on Sunday during a writ petition hearing regarding eavesdropping on phone calls.

Lawyer Shishir Monir appeared for the writ petition and Deputy Attorney General Bipul Bagmar appeared for the state.

At one point in the hearing, the court asked lawyer Shishir Monir to tell him something about the e-commerce businesses, to get an idea about this.

Then lawyer Shishir Monir said: “There are many free offers in the name of e-commerce business in our country. Whereas, foreign companies Alibaba, or Amazon do not have such offers. Our country’s customers are greedy and thus get cheated.”

At the time, the court said: “Yes. We see, if you buy one, the other is free; the hotel is free if you buy a plane ticket. That is why we are suggesting running campaigns in public interest to reduce the greed of the customers.

The High Court later fixed September 29 for the order on the writ petition filed to stop eavesdropping on phone conversations.
