Police arrested Emran Miah, 34, and Golam Rabbani, 26, residents of Tahirpur upazila, for poaching migratory birds at the Lechuamara lake in Tanguar Haor and placed them before the court of Magistrate Anjan Das. Later, the court sentenced six-month jail to the miscreants.
The area has been declared as an Ecologically Critical Area in 1999 and a Ramsar Site by Unesco the following year though fishing and hunting birds were the main income source for the residents of this 10,000-hectare wetland.
