Gold busts at Dhaka, Chittagong airports

Airport Customs House Joint Commissioner SM Sohel Rahman confirmed that gold smugglers had been detained at the Dhaka airport. Munshiganj native Mamun Hossain, 31, arrived in Dhaka from Malaysia on Malindo Air flight OD 162 at 12:30am, Tuesday. Though he stated he had no goods to declare, the Customs Preventive Team found him suspicious. They then decided to scan the rechargeable flashlight batteries he had with him. The scan revealed the presence of gold inside the batteries. Subsequently, 18 bars of gold were recovered from 3 batteries. The bars weighed 1.8kg in total and is worth about Tk90 lakh. Mamun was arrested after a case was filed against him. Moslem Uddin, 31, of Chittagong arrived in Dhaka at 9:50am on Tuesday from Oman via Chittagong, on Regent Airways flight RX 0724. At some point during the flight from Chittagong to Dhaka, he managed to insert 8 gold bars into his anal cavity. In true golden bum fashion, Moslem Uddin denied carrying any gold. When suspicious customs officers detained him and took him to a nearby hospital, x-ray scans proved otherwise. Back at the airport, after Moslem Uddin had expelled the gold from his anal passage, Customs Intelligence were able to recover 8 gold bars weighing 928g in total and with a net worth of Tk46 lakh. A case has been filed against Moslem Uddin, and he was later arrested by police.

Golden bum smugglers hit Chittagong

Not to be left behind, Customs Intelligence officials at Chittagong airport also caught two smugglers of their own. According to Revenue Officer Morshed Ali Chowdhury, Shahadat Hossain (34) of Anwara upazila in Chittagong, arrived on a FlyDubai flight around 10:30am on Tuesday. Acting on an anonymous tip, customs officials walked Shahadat through the metal detector and discovered the goods firmly lodged in his rectum. Officials recovered 15 bars, weighing 1.75kg, which Shahadat expelled from his anal passage. He was arrested after a case was filed. Earlier the same day, Customs Intelligence had confiscated four gold bars, weighing 448g, from a passenger named Md Abdul Bashar, 35, who flew in from Muscat at 8am. Bashar is from Fatikchhari in Chittagong. The customs intelligence officials filed a case against him before letting him go.
