Six aides of Bangla Bhai arrested
Police have arrested six members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Rajshahi’s Bagmara upazila a number of whom were close aides of the executed JMB leader Siddikur Rahman alias Bangla Bhai. They are accused in murder, abduction and torture cases, Bagmara police OC Nasim Ahmmed told the Dhaka Tribune. Abul Hossain, 55, Lutfor Rahman, 48, Abdul Mannan, 45, Rohidul Islam, 43, Abdur Rashid, 34, and Abdus Sattar, 28 were arrested from different parts of Bagrama upazila on Friday and Saturday, he said. OC Nasim said them were accused in various cases. They had returned to their locality after some of them had secured bails while others were cleared of charges. “They were trying to reorganise the JMB and plotting sabotage,” the officer said. JMB flourished under Bangla Bhai, the second-in-command of the terrorist group, in the north-western districts, carrying out bombing and other terrorist activities. He was executed along with JMB founder Shayakh Abdur Rahman and three majlish-e-sura members on March 29, 2007. The three others are Ataur Rahman Sunny, Abdul Awal Molla alias Omar alias Shakil Ahmed and Amjad Hossain alias Khalid Saifullah. Bangla Bhai's second-in-command Mahtab Khamaru was arrested for the fourth time in September last year while Bangla Bhai’s advisor Lutfor Rahman Pramanik alias Professor Lutfor was arrested in August 2015. JMB's second ameer, former Jamaat-e-Islami leader Maulana Saidur Rahman, has been in jail since 2010. Former majlish-e-sura member Salauddin alias Salehin now heads the old faction of the militant group, which was banned on February 23, 2005. Salehin’s group in a statement in June 2016 claimed responsibilities for over 1,100 attacks that killed over 70 people including the attack on Prof Humayun Azad in 2004 and the murder of spiritual leader Mohammad Shahidullah in Rajshahi on May 6, 2016. A new faction of the notorious outfit, which claims to be a wing of the Islamic State, has taken credit for 26 attacks in which at least 45 people were killed since September 2015.
