A man was brutally assaulted with hammers by associates of a Union Parishad chairman in Savar for refusing to give up his land to their leader.
The victim, Shahabuddin Saha, 32, is now undergoing treatment at a Savar hospital.
The attack took place on Saturday at Samail village in Savar's Birulia Union Parishad (UP), the victim's family told the Dhaka Tribune.
According to the family and locals, Birulia UP Chairman Saidur Rahman Sujon has had his eye on the two-bigha land where Shahabuddin and his family live.
Sujon has been harassing the family for a long time to give up the land, but they have repeatedly turned him down.
He also offered them a nominal value for the land, but the family refused to sell it off.
On Saturday night, as Shahabuddin was returning home from the local mosque, Sujon's followers ambushed him and forcefully took him to Sujon's house.
When Shahabuddin's parents, Shanu Miah and Uzuba Khatun, tried to stop the attackers, they beat them up too.
At Sujon's house, the goons stripped Shahabuddin off his clothes, tied up his hands and feet and beat him up with hammers, breaking the bones of his arms and legs.
Afterwards, they called police and said they had caught Shahabuddin with an illegal gun, witnesses said.
A team from Savar Model police station went to Sujon's house and rescued a severely wounded Shahabuddin, said Sub-Inspector Tariqul Islam.
He was taken to Enam Medical College and Hospital.
His sister Rahima filed a case in this regard with the police station on Monday morning, he added.
However, the sub-inspector denied having recovered a gun from Shahabuddin's possession.
When contacted, Sujon said Shahabuddin was involved with the local BNP unit. “My men beat him up because he is a terrorist.”
He also admitted to having a dispute with Shahabuddin's family over land.
Jubo League's Birulia unit President Selim Mondol said Shahabuddin was a harmless man and the goons attacked him with the intention of murder.
