Police have arrested at least 65 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami’s radical student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir allegedly for plotting subversive activities near the Shilaidaha Kuthibari of Rabindranath Tagore in Kushtia.
Seventeen of the arrestees are leaders of Chhatra Shibir while 47 others are members. They hail from Kushtia and Ishwardi of Pabna.
Kushtia Superintendent of Police SM Mehedi Hasan confirmed the arrests to the reporters.
A joint team of Kumarkhali police and the detective branch conducted the special drive in Dorikomorpur field in Alauddin Nagar area near the historic site, popular among local and international tourists, around 7:30pm Monday based on a tip-off.
Police recovered 20 hand bombs, 17 radical books and party documents from their possessions.
“They were holding a clandestine meeting in the name of joining a picnic. They had plans to carry out large-scale attacks in the area,” Additional Superintended of Police Joynal Abedin told the Dhaka Tribune.
A case has been filed in this regard.
