A kangaroo court of the Koch community in Phulbaria upazila of Mymensingh has forcefully shaved the heads of a couple and made them wear garlands of shoes for being in good terms with a Muslim family in the neighbourhood.
The elders of Hatileit village accused Laxmi Rani Koch, wife of Koyes Chandra Koch, of having illicit relationship with their Muslim neighbour Ebir Ali and enforced the punishment on the Koch couple after holding an arbitration at the house of one Mitra Mohan last Wednesday.
The couple along with their two minor daughters have also been ostracised by the community since the arbitration.
On Saturday, Laxmi filed a case with Phulbaria police station against 12 elders of the village in this connection.
The complainant claimed her family had been in good terms with a neighbouring Muslim family, but the village elders brought false charges against her.
Phulbaria police station Officer-in-Charge Rifat Khan Rajib told the Dhaka Tribune that they had already arrested an accused – Dukhiram Koch – in the case.
The arrestee had confessed to his involvement in the incident, he added.
