Banani police requests court approval to examine rape case dress
Police yesterday asked a Dhaka court for approval to run tests on a dress belonging to one of the alleged victims in the March 28 birthday party rape case. Banani police station Inspector (Investigation) Abdul Matin made the request before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ahsan Habib on Wednesday afternoon. The court set the plea hearing for Thursday. “After the case was filed, as part of the investigation, we seized the salwar kamiz of one of the victims. Now we are trying to conduct a chemical examination of the dress to find evidence of rape,” Inspector Matin said. According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police sources, the case filed on May 6 was handed over to the DMP Victim Support Centre and Investigation Unit on Tuesday evening, but Banani police and DMP Detective Branch are still assisting in the investigation process. DMP Women Support and Investigation Division Additional Deputy Commissioner Asma Siddika Mili told the Dhaka Tribune: “We received the case dockets in the morning [Wednesday] and will start the investigation and try to arrest the culprits after checking the papers.” Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told the Dhaka Tribune that the real facts of the case will be known when the accused are caught. He emphasized that no one would be spared in this case. He added that everyone who was found guilty would have to face trial. Citizens demand arrest of rape accused within 72 hours A platform of students, teachers, writers, artists, journalists and cultural activists held a meeting at the Shahbagh intersection at 5pm on Wednesday in protest of the March 28 birthday party alleged rape at the Raintree Hotel in Dhaka, and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused within the next 72 hours. This protest was called by prominent activist and academic, Gitiara Nasreen. If police were unable to make any arrests within the given timeframe, activists have said they will besiege Banani police station. Gonojagoron Moncho Spokesman Imran H Sarker told the Dhaka Tribune: “Our activists have joined the protest against the rape by forming a human chain and holding a protest rally. We will hold a bigger protest on Friday to express our condemnation of rape and sexual violence.”
