War crimes charges brought against freedom fighter commander in Barguna
Abdul Mannan Hawlader, upazila commander of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad of Barguna’s Patharghata unit, has been made accused in case filed for the committing of crimes during the Liberation War in 1971. Mizanur Rahman, son of martyred freedom fighter Matiar Rahman, filed the case with the court of Patharghata Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Rezwanuzzaman on Sunday. Mannan’s brother Abdur Razzak, his sister-in-law Hazrat Ali and 10 to 12 other unidentified people were also made accused along with him. “After hours of discussion, the judicial magistrate decided to transfer the case to the International Crimes Tribunal,” said Manoj Kumar Kirtania Mintu, the Supreme Court lawyer who has been conducting the case. According to the case statement, the accused received their training from a razakar training camp during the 1971 liberation war and participated in the looting of cattle and other valuables from innocent people. They also allegedly abducted young Bangali girls and handed them over to Pakistani military forces. The statement further read that the accused had stabbed freedom fighter Chittaranjan Adhikary on June 30, 1971, and killed the plaintiff’s father Matiar Rahman and Monohar Mistri on August 18, 1971. Monohar’s son Monomath Ranjan Mistri is the number one witness in the case. Plaintiff Mizanur Rahman said: “Although late, I filed the case with a view to having justice for my father’s murder.” Meanwhile, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad commander of Barguna district unit Md Rashid told the Dhaka Tribune that Mannan was not present when he went to Patharghata to verify the legitimacy of those claiming to be freedom fighters. “Later, after discussing the matter with other freedom fighters, I came to know that he [Mannan] was not a freedom fighter at all,” Rashid said. However, when contacted by the Dhaka Tribune over the phone, accused commander Mannan denied the allegations brought against him. “I received my training and fought the liberation war in Bagerhat’s Shoronkhola in 1971,” he said.
