Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has identified around 111 crime prone spots in the city to curb mugging as muggers have become active in different areas ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr, striking fear among shoppers and businessmen.
According to police sources, every year professional fraudsters and mugging gangs become active with assorted techniques in the country’s premier city since large amounts of money are transacted during the month of Ramadan.
As the Eid nears, seasonal muggers from adjacent districts are also coming to the city. Also, local teenagers and vicenarians, backed by political leaders, are found involved in mugging and robbery, they said.
Over 50 mugging incidents have been recorded in the city from January to June. And, on June 10, Bayezid police arrested two teenage muggers along with Tk1.50 lakh in Foyez Lake area after they had snatched away Tk2 lakh from a garment factory official, the sources also said.
The police have undertaken additional measures to ensure security at strategic points and shopping malls to nab miscreants.
A CMP source said a list of the 111 vulnerable spots had been handed over to deputy commissioner (DCs) of CMP’s four zones in a meeting on May 24, when CMP Commissioner Iqbal Bahar directed the DCs to take actions to check mugging in their respective zones.
Of the 111 spots, 30 are in the CMP south zone and 30 in north, 24 in west and 27 are in Bandar zone.
CMP Additional Commissioner (crime and operation) Saleh Mohammed Tanvir said: “DCs of the four zones have been given directives to lunch drives against miscreants.”
DC (north zone) Abdul Warish said they had deployed troops in front of shopping malls and banks, and plainclothes detectives were active to arrest criminals,
“The law enforcers are regularly patrolling different areas of the north zone,” the DC added.
