Woman brutally tortured by husband, in-laws in Chandpur

A woman lawyer has been brutally tortured by her college teacher husband in Chandpur town.

Kulsuma Begum, 40, a lawyer of the District Judges' Court is undergoing treatment at Chandpur Sadar Hospital. Marks of being beaten and human bite marks are visible on various parts of her body.

According to the victim, she married Muslim Sarder Mishu, assistant professor of Patgram Jasimuddin Kazi Abdul Gani Government College in Lalmonirhat district, eight years ago. Her family had to give Tk5 lakh in dowry after the marriage.

However, as Mishu started torturing her for more dowry, Kulsuma and her six-year-old girl started living separately in a rented house at BT Road in Chandpur town six months ago.

Mishu was also transferred to the college in Lalmonirhat from Chandpur Government College after being charged with sexually harassing three college girls three months ago.

On Friday afternoon, Mishu along with his brother Abdul Haque went to Kulsuma's house and suddenly started beating her, leaving her unconscious at one point.

The duo hired a CNG-autorickshaw and took her to their family home at Barothalia village of Matlab upazila. The woman underwent another spell of torture by her in-laws there for over an hour.

Informed by locals at BT Road, Kulsuma's brother Arif rescued her from the ordeal. She was later admitted to Chandpur Sadar Hospital.

The victim's relatives also caught her husband from Taltala area of Chandpur town and handed him over to police.

Chandpur Model police station Sub-Inspector Trinath said no case has been filed yet as the victim is receiving treatment at the hospital.
