The preventive team of Dhaka Custom House has seized 880 cartons of illegal cigarettes worth Tk22 lakh and 1,150 pieces of mobile phone memory cards worth Tk6 lakh from three people at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Dhaka Custom House Assistant Commissioner Ahsanul Kabir said being tipped-off a team of the agency conducted a nightlong drive in the airport’s baggage-belt and green channel areas early Thursday.
During the drive, the officials detained three people while they were carrying cigarettes and memory cards illegally.
Of the detainees, two are Md Al-Amin Hasan, 32 and Wasim, 28, who were held with contraband cigarettes. Both of them travelled from Dubai on Kuwait Airlines
However, the Custom House officials did not reveal the identity of another person who was held with mobile phone memory cards.
Bangladesh prohibits importing foreign-made cigarettes that do not have an anti-smoking warning written in Bangla on the packets.
