Barisal woman councillor arrested for attempted murder
A woman councillor of the Barisal City Corporation has been arrested for allegedly trying to kill a snake charmer. Israt Aman Rupa, 35, councillor for reserved seats of ward 16, 17, 18 was arrested on Thursday afternoon from her residence in Brown Compound area. Snake charmer Manna Pahari's had filed a police complaint against Rumpa three months ago after allegedly being given death threats by the councillor. Unidentified assailants attacked Manna with sharp weapons and hacked him indiscriminately on the night of July 17 at the city's Zia Sarak area. He is currently being treated at Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital. Manna's wife Kajol Begum filed a case with Kotwali police against seven persons including Rupa. Kotwali police's Officer-in-Charge Shah Md Awlad Hossain said Kajol alleged that Jubo League activist Tarikul Islam Raja had proposed her husband to carry contraband yaba tablets in boxes where snakes were kept. But Manna had declined the offer angering the Councillor Rupa and her cohort Raja who threatened to kill the snake charmer. Kajol claimed the Tuesday night attack on her husband was the result of the three-month-old incident. OC Awlad said a Barisal court had ordered Rupa to jail pending further hearing. He said they were trying to arrest the other six accused.
