A teacher of Brac University has been assaulted by Registrar Maj Gen (retd) Muhammad Sahool Afzal, Assistant Registrar Md Mahi Uddin and Senior Officer of Co-Curricular Activities Jabed Rasel, according to Banani police.
Sub-Inspector Imitazur Rahman, duty officer of Banani police station, said the incident took place on Sunday afternoon in the university's registrar's office.
The teacher, Farhaan Uddin Ahmed, a lecturer at the university's School of Law, is preparing to file a case against the trio with the police station, the sub-inspector added.
The news of the assault sparked an outrage among the students who barricaded the registrar's office around 3:30pm, locking in the registrar and other officials.
As off 11pm, the officials were still confined inside the office.
Sub-Inspector Imtiaz said: “Farhaan's appointment at the university was contractual. As his contract expired, he went to the registrar's office to discuss it. At one point of the meeting, the trio physically attacked him. He sustained injuries from the assault.”
A police team was deployed inside the university campus shortly after the incident to keep the situation under control, the sub-inspector added.
