Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Mizanur Rahman Pikul has been temporarily suspended on Monday over the physical assault charge of three people in a fish market at Palashi.
Chhatra League Central Committee Sub-Environment Secretary Pikul allegedly physically assaulted Shahanara Lipi, her husband and younger sister.
A press release signed by Chhatra League President Saifur Rahman Sohag and General Secretary SM Zakir Hossain confirmed Pikul's suspension over breaking the organisation's code.
Shahanara said: “I went to the fish market with my husband [Ruhul Amin] and younger sister at Palashi yesterday [Sunday] evening. My husband bumped into Pikul by mistake. Pikul was enraged by this and stared to verbally and physically abuse my husband.”
"When I protested, Pikul and his followers physically assaulted my sister and me as well," she added.
Shahanara is the sister of the organisation’s Central Committee Vice President Jahangir Alam.
Meanwhile, Pikul denied the allegation and said: “My suspension is a political move. I am from the same area [Chuadanga-Jibannagar] as Jahangir. He is using his sister to throw me out of the group.”
Chawkbazar Model police station OC Shamim-ur-Rashid Talukder said: “Shahanara filed a written complaint in connection with the assault yesterday [Sunday]. However, no case has been filed so far.”
