UP chairman sued for raping college girl in Bogra

A case has been filed against a union parishad chairman and Awami League leader in Bogra's Nandigram upazila for raping a college girl. The victim, an honours second-year student, filed the case with Shahjahanpur police station on Thursday. According to the case statement, Bhatra union parishad (UP) Chairman Morshedul Islam raped the girl for about one year after falsely promising to marry her. The man also allegedly threatened to harm the victim's relatives to force her into sexually exploitative situations. Morshedul is also the president of the union unit of Awami League. Shahjahanpur police station Officer-in-Charge Zia Latiful Islam said they had sent the victim to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for some medical tests. The accused could not be contacted by mobile phone despite repeated attempts. When contacted, Nandigram upazila unit AL President Jahedur Rahman claimed that the accused had had a love affair with the victim for a long time, and that the case was filed after the accused refused to marry the girl. If the accused is found guilty after an investigation, legal steps will be taken against him, he said.
