Police station had no info on suspected militant Abudullah
Komol Prova apartment building in Mirpur’s Borbdhonbari area of Dhaka is only about 200 yards away from the Darus Salam police station and yet police could not trace suspected militant Abdullah who had lived in the area since 2003. Furthermore, the office of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Assistant Commissioner (Darus Salam zone) is only 50 yards from the six-storey Komol Prova. DMP AC (Darus Salam) Syed Mamun Mostafa told the Dhaka Tribune: “Abdullah camouflaged as a pigeon trader and IPS-maker to stay away from law enforcers’ eyes. Besides, no criminal record has been found against him since he started living here.” But the police official admitted that the local police station does not have enough information about the tenant Abdullah. The owner of Komol Prova, Habibullah Bahar Azad, who is now on a five-day remand after being arrested in a terrorism case lodged with Savar police station earlier this year, did not provide his tenants’ detailed information to the local police, the AC said. Claiming that some local house owners did not submit the complete information of their tenants, Darus Salam police station OC Selimujjaman told the Dhaka Tribune: “We would have arrested Abdullah if we had information on him. “This is a lesson for us. Now we are scrutinising all the collected tenant forms and started to make those fully informative so that none can escape the hand of law.” RAB traced Abdullah from information given by two suspected militants arrested from Tangail on September 4. RAB announces Komol Prova explosive free RAB, after a 97-hour drive at Komol Prova that started around 1:30am on September 5, recovered huge stock of explosives, explosives-making materials and lethal arms before concluding the raid around 4pm on Friday. The security agency recovered 50 locally made chemical bombs, 17 stronger bombs, 30 IED (Improvised Explosive Device) grenades, 10kg gunpowder, one container of acid and other combustibles, 100 locally made sharp weapons, explosives and ignites from the hideout. RAB Director (Media and Legal wing) Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan said: “On Friday, the elite force recovered seven powerful bombs, including two IEDs with refrigerators, 30 IED grenades, 20 chemical bombs, nine containers, 12kg explosives and one carton containing 1,000 ignites. “We made the whole building explosive-free and asked the authorities concerned to check whether the building is livable or not as the explosions caused damage on third and fourth floors.” He also said the top floor of the building was used as a bomb-making lab by the militants, and though the raid ended, the damaged floor will be kept under RAB surveillance. Earlier, the elite force recovered a blueprint of a multi-storey building from the hideout. The militants had marked out spots in the blueprint. “We assume that the militants might have had a plan to attack a big establishment,” Mufti said. He said: “Abdullah used to work at an electrical store where he made and repaired Instant Power Supply (IPS) units. The presence of the design and explosives led us to believe that they were probably planning to attack a multi-storey building.” RAB looks for ‘Don Bhai’ Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan said they are now looking for a militant identified as “Don Bhai” – the name uttered by militant Abdullah during the raid before his death. The RAB official said: “We are also trying to collect information about five to six other cohorts of Abdullah.” But the RAB high official did not say more about Don Bhai or the other associates of Abdullah for the sake of their investigation.
