Police allegedly break into Savar house, loot Tk50,000
Savar police forcibly entered a house in the middle of the night in search of two persons accused in a case of gender-based violence, but eventually ended up smashing furniture and looting Tk50,000, locals have alleged. According to the victims, Savar Model police station SI Abul Kashem, along with 4 to 5 other policemen, carried out the operation at Abdul Aziz’s house located in Savar’s Jamsing Moholla around 3:30am on Monday. Owner of the house Abdul Aziz told the Dhaka Tribune that his daughter-in-law Tumpa Begum filed a case under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act against him and his son Mazedul Haque Mintu in the year 2016. “No sooner was the case filed, we obtained our bails from the court. Later, in January this year, the court granted us bail once again when we sought for it following an arrest warrant issued against us,” Abdul Aziz added. Meanwhile, his son and daughter-in-law Tumpa officially got a divorce and both the families came to an understanding. Documentation in this regard was also submitted to the concerned police station, claimed Abdul Aziz.

“But recently, SI Kashem started demanding Tk50,000 from our family threatening that he got an arrest warrant against us.” “As we refused to meet his demand, the cop, with some of his associates, invaded our house at midnight when no male person was there and looted Tk50,000.” “They also took Tk5,000 from a neighbour’s house,” he added. Several eyewitnesses, including Sufia Khatun, Mariam Akter and Lal Banu told the Dhaka Tribune that some 4 to 5 policemen broke the door of the house when some female members from inside had refused to let them in. The policemen vandalised the house in front of the neighbours who were present at that time, they claimed. However, SI Abul Kashem, when contacted, utterly denied the allegations brought against him. He said: “We conducted the drive in a bid to arrest accused criminals.” Asked why the drive was carried out to arrest accused when they were on bail, the policemen replied: “No paper of their bail was submitted to the police station.” The policeman had no comment when asked why the drive was conducted 10 months after the arrest warrant was issued.
