Businessman murdered in Badda: Police in search of 4 youths

Twenty-eight-year-old businessman Monjil Hoque was found dead at his residence in Dhaka’s Aftabnagar area under Badda police station. His body was found at his residence in Dhaka’s Aftabnagar area under Badda police station. After the recovery of the body on Monday, police detained a woman who had visited Monjil right before his murder, and started looking for four youths who might have links to the incident. Badda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Wazed Ali said: “Monjil's body was recovered from his flat Monday afternoon. "Four youths and a woman had visited him before his murder. The woman is in our custody now and we are looking for the other four suspects.” He said: "We have found several deep injury marks on his neck. The veins of both of his hands were severed and his legs were tied up." Requesting anonymity, a police officer of Badda police station said Monjil was murdered in his dining room and the murderers cut his limbs after slitting his throat.  Blood-stained clothes and knife recovered.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police recovered blood-stained bed sheets, two knives and t-shirts from the crime scene. Police have learned that the killers wore black denim trousers and T-shirts of the same colour.Talking about the woman and the youths, building's security guard Abul Kalam Azad: “The woman came to me and said she wanted to go to Monjil sir's flat. “An hour later, four youths also came to the building and went to the same flat. They told me that they had a talk with him [Monjil] before coming here.” "The four men came down 15 minutes later and left the place in a hurry. Soon after that, the woman came down screaming that the four youths had killed Monjil sir,” he added saying that he noticed Monjil’s body lying in a pool of blood when he entered the flat. Azad said he did not find the woman when he went downstairs and informed the owner of the building immediately. According to Azad, the woman used to visit Monjil often.

Who is the woman?

According to police sources, Monjil had a love affair with the woman named Sharmin Akhter alias Nishi. However, Nishi chose not to make any statement regarding the matter when police interrogated her while in their custody. Ashraful Karim, senior assistant commissioner of Badda zone of Gulshan division, said: "The woman [Nishi] in our custody is being interrogated since she was present at the time of the murder. “We are trying to find out more about the affair, family feuds or business disputes which could have led to the murder."

What Monjil's relatives say

Neighbour and relatives went to the house soon after they came to know about the murder. Monjil's uncle Faruk Hossain said: "Monjil was the only child of Mainul Haque and Parvin Kajol. His parents live in Comilla's Homona area."Mainul married his second wife Yasmin Lipi in 1995, who was a cousin of his first wife. He has a son and three daughters from the second marriage.”He said Monjil's mother died in a fire incident at a rented house in Shantinagar three years ago while his father died this June.Faruk further added that Monjil's father had bought two flats for his sons in Banasree and Aftab town prior to his death. Monjil lived alone in one of the flats after getting a divorce from his wife. According to the relatives, Monjil wanted to go to London after completing his O-Level exams from Holly Crescent School but later changed his decision and opened a car workshop business in Banasree. His stepmother also rushed to the spot after hearing the news of his murder. Claiming to have a good relationship with Monjil, Lipi said she has no idea about who the murderers could be.

What the police say about the incident

After the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) of DMP Mushtaq Ahmed said: "We have got some initial information and are trying to sort through them. We are trying to gather more information about the youths and the woman who entered the flat." DC Motahar Ahmed expressed hope that the murder case will be solved soon.
