Press staff arrested over DU question paper leak
A staff member of a press that prints for Dhaka University (DU) was arrested yesterday for his alleged involvement in leaking the question paper for the university's D-unit admission test. On October 20 this year, a full section of the question paper for the test for the 2017-18 academic session was leaked, about seven hours before the exam was due to begin. The university authorities claimed that they did not have any information or evidence on the question paper leak, even though the English section in the question paper and the leaked questions were found to be identical. “A team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) captured Khan Bahadur from his residence at Indira Road on Thursday afternoon,” CID Special Superintendent of Police (SSP) Molla Nazrul said in a press briefing at the CID headquarters in Dhaka. In a series of drives since December 7, the CID have detained 10 people, including two students of the University of Rajshahi, for their alleged involvement in leaking the D-unit question papers. The SSP said that they had arrested Saiful Islam from Jamalpur district on Wednesday, and he had provided the information which led to Khan Bahadur's arrest. “Saiful, Bahadur and Rakibul Hasan, who is the sports officer for Natore and Pabna districts, knew each other. They leaked the question papers at different locations,” he said.

Earlier, police with the assistance of the DU proctorial body arrested seven students in connection with the question paper leaks. On December 7, Nazmul Hasan Nayeem, 19, was arrested from Dhaka’s Jigatola area. He is said to be one of the leaders of the group involved in leaking the question papers. On December 9, the CID team detained Boni Israel, 23, and Mohammad Maruf, 24, from Rajshahi Medical College and the Binodpur area of Rajshahi Sadar respectively. The two collected information on students and forwarded them to Rakibul. “The racket used to charge between Tk200,000 and Tk500,000 from each student in exchange for the leaked question paper,” SSP Nazrul said. “A total 23 people have so far been arrested in connection with the question paper leaks and legal action will be taken against them.”
