Man beaten to death by rivals after escaping police arrest

Update : 21 Dec 2017, 06:04 PM
A man has been beaten to death allegedly by his rivals in a land dispute, after he had successfully evaded police arrest by going into hiding. The relatives of Nezamul Haque Hashu, 55, recovered his body from near his residence at Goalpara village in Cox's Bazar Sadar upazila in the early hours of Thursday. On receiving the information, police went to the village and took Nezamul's body to the Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Nezamul, who was the accused in a case filed by his rival Liakat over a land dispute, managed to go into hiding when a team from Sadar police station conducted a drive at his residence to arrest him on Wednesday night, according to his wife Alam Ara Begum. Alam Ara said:“The police team could not find my husband and left the village. Later, we heard some commotion only a short distance away from the house. I, along with some relatives and neighbours, went to the spot following the sound and saw that a group of men, led by Liakat, were beating my husband. They left the scene sensing our presence.” Nezamul was whisked off to a local doctor, who declared him dead, she added. Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Ranjit Barua said Nezamul had a longstanding land dispute with his paternal cousins Liakat and Russel, and a police team had gone to the village on Wednesday night to arrest Nezamul for a case filed by Liakat. “Police could not arrest Nezamul as he went into hiding, but his rivals may have made use of the chance to beat him to death. There are injury marks consistent with a beating on the body of the deceased. We've already arrested two women to learn more about the incident,” the OC added.
