
The hearing in law student Jakia Sultana Rupa’s rape and murder case finished on February 5, with the court determining February 12 for delivering the verdict.
Regarding the verdict that will be delivered next Monday, Rupa's elder brother Hafizur Rahman gave his reaction to the Dhaka Tribune.
“My mother is eagerly waiting for the verdict of those who violated and killed my sister. The members of my family, along with everyone in the neighbourhood are waiting for exemplary punishment of the culprits,” Hafizur Rahman hoped with his trembling voice.
“We are optimistic about the impending verdict, and we hope for justice. If the criminals are awarded capital punishment, my sister's soul may find peace,” he added.

Earlier, state advocate Nasimul Akhter Nasim told the Dhaka Tribune: "We have been able to prove this case on the basis of witness' testimony, circumstance and necessary documents. Hence we have asked for maximum punishment-- death penalty for the accused.”
Rupa was gang-raped aboard a moving bus of "Chhoa Paribahan" and murdered when traveling to Mymensingh from Bogra on August 25 last year. The attackers dumped her body in Modhupur upazila afterwards.

She was studying law at Dhaka Ideal Law College after obtaining an MA from Bogra Azizul Haque College. Rupa worked at Unilever Bangladesh Limited’s Sherpur branch.
Police filed a murder case at Modhupur station accusing five people on August 26 and arrested bus driver Habibur, supervisor Safar Ali, and assistants Shamim, Akram and Jahangir two days later.
All five men have confessed before a court about their involvement in the crime.
