
A team of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has reportedly arrested three members of a gang, involved in fraudulent activities using social media platforms, from Dhaka's Hazaribagh area on Wednesday.
The arrestees are Md Kausar, 28, Md Tofail Islam Titu, 39, and Rezaul Islam, 49.
RAB also recovered a foreign-made pistol, three rounds of bullets, 33 ATM cards and eight chequebooks of different banks, five sim cards and a total of Tk9,67,010 cash, according to a press release issued by the elite force.
Around 11:40pm, the three con artists were using their ill-gotten money at Jigatola area. Sensing presences of RAB 2 patrolling around the area, they tried to run away and were apprehended.
During primary investigation, they confessed to cheating people from various regions after developing affairs using social media platforms such as Facebook, Viber, Whatsapp, and Imo.
The accused also said they used to introduce themselves to the victims as foreign nationals like African, American, British, etc. After gaining their trusts, the accused told the victims that they have sent gifts for them and ask them to collect the gifts from Shahjalal International Airport, after finishing all the formalities for customs clearance.
For the clearance from customs the accused gave their associates' bank details, and asked the victims to send the clearance money to the accounts. Once the victims sent the funds to the bank accounts the accused immediately withdrew the money.
