DMP commissioner: Shibir behind Holey Artisan attack

Update : 05 Mar 2018, 10:19 PM
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia has blamed Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, for the Gulshan Holey Artisan attack. “Our investigation has found their involvement at certain stages of the attack,” he said. The DMP chief made the statement at a rally and concert program against drug and terrorism at Jagannath University campus on Monday. He also said: “We have arrested many militants, some of whom study at renowned universities. We have noticed in our investigation that a group of people gradually influenced the teenagers by misusing religion in conversations held during breaks or prayer time. The students were then gradually misled into militancy and extremism,” “The teachers of those universities need to act in order to prevent such nefarious activities,” he added. The commissioner also said a group of people are using their religion as a tool, misinterpreting it to mislead people. They are creating militancy for their own wicked gain and to weaken Bangladesh by creating anarchy, he said. “We have dismantled their network, but they could try to do harm sporadically such as the attack on Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Sunday. The attacker was arrested and we are investigating. Their patrons and instructors will be brought under the law,” he said. “Our Counter terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit and other intelligence agencies are working to oust the roots of this militancy,” Asaduzzaman said.
