DMP: Attack on VC’s house work of professionals
The attack on Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman’s house was “the work of professionals,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said on Thursday. Speaking at a press briefing about security measures for Pohela Boishakh, the DMP chief said the attackers destroyed the CCTV footage and took away the hard disc from the vice-chancellor’s house. “Looking at the pattern of the attack, we understand that it was the work of professionals,” he said. “Our best officers are investigating the matter. The perpetrators will soon be identified and arrested.” While students and jobseekers were staging a protest in Shahbagh demanding quota reform early on Monday, vandals armed with rods, hockey sticks and bamboo sticks broke into the vice-chancellor’s residence. They smashed almost every window and set vehicles parked in the compound on fire. No casualties were reported but four cases have been filed with Shahbagh police station over the incidents that took place in the Dhaka University (DU) area during the quota reform demonstration. Shahbah police OC Abul Hasan said the cases were filed early on Wednesday morning. DU Chief Security Officer Kamrul Ahsan filed a case against unknown persons for vandalism and attack on the VC residence. Another case was filed by Inspector Humayun Kabir of Dhaka city Special Branch against unknown individuals for torching his motorcycle and snatching his wireless set. Sub-Inspectors Vojon Kumar Biswash and Rabiul Islam of Shahbagh police filed the other two cases against unknown people for obstruction in police work and arson. Students and jobseekers began protesting to demand the reform of the quota system in mid-February. The movement grew in strength after a road blockade that began at Shahbagh on Sunday evening turned violent after a police crackdown. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in parliament that there would no longer be any quotas in public service recruitment.
