Three policemen have sustained bullet wounds in a reported gunfight with a group of drug peddlers during a raid in Dhaka’s Gandaria area.
Following the incident, police have detained two alleged drug dealers, one with bullet injury, while another suspect managed to flee the scene.
They also seized around 2,000 pieces of yaba pills from their possession.
The alleged gunfight took place at a flat of a multistorey building in the Ghuntighar Sheltek Gali in Gandaria, near Asgar Ali Hospital, around 4pm on Thursday, said Gandaria police Inspector Mahbub Alam.
However, the three injured policemen – Assistant Sub-Inspectors Mohsin Ali and Moshiur Rahman and Constable Bashir Uddin – are stable and undergoing treatment at the hospital, Mahbub said quoting the doctors.
He said one of them was shot in the hand and the two others on their legs.
Acting on a tip-off that a drug dealer named Sonia, 24, was about to receive a big consignment of yaba, police conducted the raid in her house, he said. “But the criminals opened fire sensing our presence.”
One of the main suspects, Babul, fled the scene firing indiscriminately, injuring the three policemen, while Sonia and another man were detained from the flat, said DMP Assistant Commissioner (Wari Zone) Md Shamsuzzaman Babu.
The other arrestee was identified as Jewel, 20. He sustained bullet injuries in his leg.
