17 suspects identified over attack on DU VC residence
Detectives have identified 17 other suspects in connection with the attack on the residence of Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Dr Akhtaruzzaman during the quota reform movement. Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) of Police identified the suspects with help of CCTV (Close Circuit Camera Television) footage around the DU campus. An official connected with the investigation said that the majority of the attackers are Dhaka University students. DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman said: “Those who were previously arrested in connection with the attack were taken into remand and are being questioned. “We are trying to figure out who gave the order to attack the vice-chancellor’s residence, and who else were among the attackers.” DB police arrested four more suspects from Dhaka’s Chankharpul area on Sunday. They are Md Rakibul Hasan, 26, Md Masud Alam, 25, Md Ali Hossain Sheikh, 28, and Ali Sayeed Fazle Rabbi alias Siam, 20. An investigation official said: “Following the attack, we began collecting and analyzing the CCTV footage of the campus. We also worked to track down two mobile phones that were stolen during the attack. “We have found evidence that another 17 people were involved with that attack.” The police had sought the help of the university administration for identifying the culprits. Provosts of different student dormitories helped police in identifying the attackers. The correspondent has learned that a number of students from the Bijoy Ekattor Dormitory in Dhaka University took part in the attack. While students and jobseekers were staging a protest in Shahbagh demanding quota reform on April 9, vandals armed with rods, hockey sticks and bamboo sticks broke into the vice-chancellor’s residence. They smashed almost every window and set vehicles parked in the compound on fire. No casualties were reported, but four cases were filed with Shahbagh police station over the incidents that took place in Dhaka University area during the quota reform demonstrations.
