Deceased Shahin Sultana Fancy was a Mohila League member
A local Awami League leader has been detained for allegedly murdering his wife in Sholaghar area under Faridganj upazila of Chandpur district.
Mohila League member Shahin Sultana Fancy, 50, was reportedly murdered at her residence Monday night. She was also the principal of Gollak Degree College, and former president of the Chandpur Lawyers Association.
Chandpur model police station Officer-in-Charge Waliullah Oli confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.
He said: “Fancy’s husband Advocate Zahirul Islam is a local Awami League leader. We have detained him and his second wife Julekha over the murder.”
Fancy’s brother Abu Nayeem claimed that Zahirul murdered her because of a family dispute.
He said there was a longstanding quarrel between the couple over Zahirul’s second marriage.
Forkan, Fancy’s other brother, also claimed that the murder was premeditated.
He said: “There was tension in their family regarding Zahirul’s second marriage. That is why he murdered my sister.
“Zahirul called us around 11pm last night [Monday]. We went over to their home and saw the body lying in a pool of blood.”
Zahirul Islam said: “I was not home. I came and saw that the door was opened. Her body was lying on the floor. People came in hearing my screams.”
Relatives and locals said Fancy and Zahirul were married for over 20 years. They have three daughters, of them, two live abroad, and one of them is studying at Comilla Medical College.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman said: “We went to the spot after hearing the news. We are looking into the incident.”
Chandpur Awami League General Secretary Abu Nayeem Patwari said: “This is a terrible incident. We are all in shock.”
Chandpur Mohila League leader Farida Ilias said: “Fancy has been involved with politics for over 30 years. We want justice for her.”
