Govt will bring perpetrators to justice, the minister says

Road Transport Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said the government is concerned about the killings of war crimes trial witness Shumon Zahid and Munshiganj publisher Shahjahan Bachchu.

Shahjahan, an author, free thinker and publisher, was shot dead near his home in Munshiganj. Shumon, son of martyred intellectual Selina Parvin, was found dead on railway tracks in Dhaka on Thursday. Police have not yet declared the latter’s death as murder.

“We are deeply concerned about the murders of martyred intellectual's son Shumon Zahid and communist leader Shahjahan Bachchu. This are premeditated murders,” Obaidul told reporters on Friday at the Feni Circuit House.

“We will identify those who are behind these murders, their motives and how they are doing it. They will face justice,” he added.

The minister said the law enforcement agencies suspect that extremist militant groups were behind Shahjahan's murder.

“They are trying to identify the culprits,” he said.

“Shumon was one of the major witnesses of Gono Adalot in the movement against Razakar Ghulam Azam. He also testified at the war crimes trial,” he added.

“He had been threatened many times before and we believe his murder was pre-planned.”
