Two people have been arrested over the gang rape of a Class 7 madrasa student in Sylhet.
The arrestees, Abdul Ahad, 25 and Azai, 32, were apprehended from the village of Jamalpur in Dewan Bazar union around 8pm on Saturday.
The matter was confirmed by Balaganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Gazi Ataur Rahman, who added that they were trying to capture the other suspects incriminated in the case.
According to the victim’s family, the girl was on her way to her uncle’s hut within the same settlement around 7:30pm Thursday when she was ambushed by 5-6 men. They then took the victim to a deserted barn south of the house and gang raped her.
After 30 minutes of torture, the girl became unconscious from bleeding. Shortly afterwards, family members found her. After regaining consciousness, she was able to name Abdul Ahad and Azai, and told of four other unknown suspects.
She was then admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, where she underwent surgery to stop her bleeding.
The victim’s father filed a case with Balaganj police station on Friday night against Ahad, Azai, and four other unknown suspects.
An ongoing protest in the area demanding justice in the matter even drew the attention of Sylhet Additional Superintendent of Police (In-charge) Imam Md Sadid, who inspected the area himself.
