The victim’s family accuses local ruling party supporters of committing the heinous crime

A woman was gang-raped by a group of miscreants at her home in Modhya bagar area at Noakhali’s Subarnachar upazila in the wee hours of Monday.

The victim’s husband filed a case against nine people at Charjabbar police station on Monday night, said the station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nizam Uddin.

One of the accused has already been arrested, he said. “Raids are on to catch the others.”

The husband, an auto-rickshaw diver, claimed that his wife, 30, was assaulted, taken away from their home and subsequently raped by at least 10-15 men, who were reportedly supporters of Awami League.

The woman was admitted to Noakhali General Hospital later on Monday afternoon.

The hospital’s Resident Medical Officer Dr Syed Mohiuddin Abdul Azim said the victim was undergoing medical tests and treatment.

“There are multiple wounds on her body. We are giving her all necessary treatment,” he added.

The victim’s husband alleged that the firearms-carrying ruling party men had barged into their home around Sunday midnight, tied him and his children up; before sexually violating his wife because she voted for the local BNP MP candidate during Sunday’s 11th general election.

The attackers left their home around 4am Monday, he said.

He claimed that former Charjubilee Union Parishad member and Awami League’s Subarnachar unit Publicity Secretary Ruhul Amin had led the perpetrators and also threatened to kill all members of the family if they tell anyone about the incident.

Ruhul rejected the allegations, saying he had no knowledge of the incidents.

The nine people the victim’s husband named in the case were Sohel, Hanif, Swapan, Chowdhury, Mosharef, Badsha Alam, Salahuddin, Bechu and Abul, said Charjabbar police OC Nizam Uddin. Of them, Badsha was arrested.

Asked why Ruhul was not accused in the case, the husband claimed that he was illiterate and had asked the police to write everything down, including Ruhul’s name in the list of accused. “I do not know why they did not.”

He demanded exemplary punishment of the perpetrators.

The OC, however, said they accused in the case only those the husband had named.

Meanwhile, at a press conference in Dhaka, the National Human Rights Commission’s Chairman Kazi Reazul Haque on Tuesday announced that they have formed a three-member investigation team to look into the matter.

The commission has also asked the Noakhali district’s deputy commissioner to take all necessary steps to address the matter.

Women’s organizations Bangladesh Mohila Parishad and Naripokkho have also condemned the incident and demanded justice and proper medical treatment for the victim.
