A man has slaughtered his sister-in-law and her two daughters and made an attempt to kill his own daughter over a family dispute in Siddhirganj upazila of Narayanganj.

The incident took place at the victims’ flat on the fifth floor of a six-storey building in CI Khola area, under Ward No 1, around 8am on Thursday, according to police and locals.

The deceased were identified as Nazmin Begum, 26, wife of Sumon Miya; and their daughters - Nusrat, 8, and Khadiza, 2. Sumon was the one who found the bodies lying in a pool of blood on the floor of their home.

Nazmin’s niece, Sumaiya, 15, was also severely injured in the incident, and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Narayanganj SP Harun Or Rashid told a press briefing last night that the prime suspect, Nazmin’s brother-in-law Abbas Bepari, 35, was arrested from in front of the Siddhirganj 335 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant in the evening — hours after Sumon filed a case at Siddhirganj police station.

He said Abbas, during preliminary interrogation, confessed to committing the murders “in revenge after being humiliated by his brother-in-law.” “We will interrogate him further after taking him into remand.”

SP Harun said Abbas claimed he carried out the heinous crime out of spite after Nazmin’s brother Hasan slapped him and took his wife Yasmin and daughter Sumaiya to Nazmin’s home several days ago.

Hasan said: “Abbas is a drug addict. He used to frequently beat my sister Yasmin and her daughter. Yasmin and Sumaiya went to Nazmin’s flat on Wednesday seeking shelter. That’s why he may have killed them.”

Abbas, who lived with his family in Batenpara area, also confirmed that his wife used to go to Nazmin’s home with their daughter after they had heated arguments.

Nazmin’s husband Sumon said he found the throat-slit bodies of her wife and daughters and an injured Sumaiya after he returned home from work in the morning.

After being informed about the murders, police arrived at the location and recovered the bodies. They were later sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsies.

Police also said that Abbas’s daughter Sumaiya told them her father was the one who attacked her and killed her aunt and cousins.

SP Harun said Abbas broke into Nazmin’s home and carried out the murders, after Yasmin, who works at a local readymade garment factory, left for work on Thursday morning.
