Crackdown on casinos: 2 policemen suspended for allegedly helping foreigners flee

Three policemen had reportedly warned some suspects before a raid last week

Two policemen have been suspended for allegedly helping Nepali nationals flee Bangladesh hours before law enforcement agencies launched an operation to arrest them in connection with illegal casino business in Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam made the disclosure on Thursday, at a views exchange with the executive committee of Crime Reporters' Association of Bangladesh at the DMP headquarters in the capital.

On September 18, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted raids on illegal casinos in Fakirerpool Youngmen's Club in Motijheel, Dhaka Wanderers' Club the Fakirapool, Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra in Gulistan, and Golden Dhaka Bangladesh in Banani.

Later, in the early hours of September 19, law enforcement agencies raided an apartment building in Segunbagicha to apprehend some Nepali nationals, but found no one there.

It was reported that three policemen went there before the raid took place and warned the foreigners, after which the Nepali nationals fled.

CCTV footage of all of them entering and leaving the building was also recovered.

The DMP chief on Thursday said: "Two policemen have been identified from the CCTV footage and they have been suspended, even though they are trying to establish that they went there as a part of their duty."

Investigation on this matter is on, he added.

According to police sources, they suspended policemen are Constable Dipanker Chakma of Ramna police station and DMP Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Golam Hossain Mithu.

Asked whether they were investigation allegations that police knew about the illegal casinos and if they found involvement of any police officer, the DMP commissioner said they were working on it and officers were assigned to investigate.

He also said: “Even if anybody is a beneficiary such case, they don't want to admit it. It is difficult to investigate such cases. Detectives are working in the field. I want them to paint a complete picture.”

Shafiqul added that an ASI has also been transferred when asked if any policeman from the Detective Branch was “stand released” over their alleged involvement in the casino business.

Shafiqul said: "We are investigating whether any policeman is involved in casino business. If anyone is found guilty, action will be taken against them.”
