The gold bars are valued at around Tk5 crore
Officials of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) have seized 68 gold bars, weighing a total of about 8kg, from inside the seat of a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday.
Customs Intelligence Director General (DG) Mubinul Kabir told Dhaka Tribune: “We received information on the gold that was being smuggled and seized the bars. However, no suspects have been identified or arrested yet.”
The gold bars are valued at around Tk5 crore in the Bangladeshi market, he said.
The DG also said the Biman flight arrived from Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates in the morning. Subsequently, CIID officials searched the aircraft and found the gold bars hidden inside a seat.
He added that CIID are in the process of analysing the passenger list to identify who was carrying the bars.
“A case will be filed with the Airport police station. Police and Dhaka Customs are jointly working in this regard,” said the DG.
