5 detained with snake venom worth 85C in Dhaka

The suspects were detained at Chowdhury Para under Rampura police station on Friday

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has recovered snake venom worth Tk85 crore and detained five people on suspicion of being members of a snake venom smuggling ring.

The five were captured with snake venom during a raid by RAB-12 in the Lohar Gate area of Chowdhury Para under Rampura police station in the afternoon on Friday.

RAB Senior Assistant Director (Legal and Media wing) ASP Imran Khan confirmed the matter to Bangla Tribune.

The five  suspects are yet to be identified. Detailed information on this matter will be disclosed later, the ASP said.

On December 25, RAB-2 seized snake venom worth Tk75 crore from the Dakshinkhan police station area in  Dhaka and arrested six people on charges of being members of an international snake venom smuggling group.

RAB said they searched a bag the six were carrying and found 8.96kg (including jars) of snake venom with an estimated value of Tk75 crore.

Primary interrogation revealed that snake venom is in demand among a certain section of people. The venom is collected and smuggled from different parts of the world to make high profits.
