The child’s mother on Saturday filed a case with Magura Sadar police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act in connection with the sexual harassment and assault
A 12-year-old girl with a disability has been sexually abused in Magura.
The child’s mother on Saturday filed a case with Magura Sadar police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act in connection with the sexual harassment and assault.
Tito Molla, 30, of the same village has been accused of abusing the child.
The victim’s brother said his sister had gone out to collect fallen leaves from a nearby garden when she was assaulted on Friday
Joynal Abedin, officer-in-charge of Magura Sadar Police Station, said: “The victim’s brother called the national emergency helpline 999 as locals did not pay heed to their accusations. The incident is yet to be confirmed as she is undergoing medical tests now and the suspect is on the run.”
Children with disabilities face a higher risk of sexual abuse because they often cannot express themselves clearly and have to depend on others for safety. Children with mental disabilities are abused more frequently than children with other disabilities as they are easier to manipulate.
626 children sexually abused in Bangladesh last year
At least 626 children were sexually abused last year, despite the closure of educational institutions and the absence of public gatherings amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
At least 145 children died from rape, attempted rape, murder, abduction, disappearance, and torture.
Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) disclosed the findings in their annual report on the situation of children in the country.
The non-governmental organisation also found that children in Bangladesh were not even safe at home, as most rapes were perpetrated by acquaintances of the family and neighbours.
