A customs officer has been arrested over the theft of nearly 20kg gold from the Benapole Customs House .

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Arshad Hossain, who was in charge of the vault during the 2019 heist, from Munshiganj late on Saturday, reports UNB.

The arrest was made on a tip-off, CID Inspector Serajul Islam, the investigating officer, told the news agency on Sunday.

Arshad was produced before the court the same day, when he was sent to jail. Investigators have moved a remand petition to interrogate him in custody, according to the CID.

A total of 19.3kgs of gold worth Tk10.43 crore were stolen from the Benapole Customs House on November 7, 2019, when Arshad was in charge of the vault of the customs house.

However, police found the vault intact. The close circuit cameras of the customs house were found switched off during the incident.

Later, Revenue Officer Emdadul Haque filed a case with Benapole Port police station.

As the key of the vault was under the custody of one Shahibul, the customs authorities suspended him for negligence of duty in 2019. Police arrested Shahibul for his suspected involvement.

Assistant revenue officer Biswanat Kundu, who was also arrested the same year over the incident, gave a confessional statement before the court.
