Immigration official says the same; airport authorities say leaving on a cargo flight not possible

Police do not have any information confirming that Sayem Sobhan Anvir, managing director of business conglomerate Bashundhara Group, has fled Bangladesh.

Sayem is accused of abetting the death of 21-year-old college student Mosarat jahan Munia, who police say committed suicide.

Hours after the news broke out, A Dhaka court imposed a travel ban on the Bashundhara MD on Tuesday.

“So far, we don’t have any information on Sayem Sobhan Anvir leaving the country,” said Deputy Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Gulshan division, when contacted by Dhaka Tribune.

The immigration authorities echoed the same.

“Per the information of both his passports [Bangladesh and Slovakia] in the immigration system, the Bashundhara MD has not left the country,” said a high official at airport immigration, who requested to remain anonymous.

“However, if someone leaves the country by hiding in a cargo flight, that is beyond our control,” the immigration official told Dhaka Tribune. “The airport authorities are better suited to clarify that.”

When contacted, Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul Ahsan, director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, refuted the possibility.

“There is no scope for someone to leave the airport on a cargo flight,” he said.

When told about some news reports saying Sayem had left the country on a cargo flight at 7:10pm on Monday, the Dhaka airport director said: “Those news outlets should disclose how they got that information. Otherwise, there is no point in spreading confusion.”

A top official of aviation security at Dhaka airport, requesting not to be named, also refuted the statement.

“As per all the information of the cargo flights that left Dhaka airport, as well as security information and CCTV footage, Sayem Sobhan Anvir did not leave the country on any cargo flight,” he told Dhaka Tribune.

He further said he would further investigate after collecting all the information from the relevant department at the airport.

Munia’s body was discovered hanging at the flat she was living in, by her sister Nusrat Jahan on Monday.

According to the case over Munia’s death, filed by Nusrat with Gulshan police station, Sayem and Munia were involved in a relationship.

The case statement also mentions that Munia's life was under threat, particularly from Sayem’s family.
