Construction of Karnaphuli tunnel likely to begin in August
Construction of the Tk8.5 thousand crore multi-lane tunnel under the Karnaphuli River is expected to begin next month. "The primary groundwork to construct the tunnel and build up twin cities on both banks of the Karnaphuli River has already been completed," said Engineer Kabir Ahmed, director of the project (PD), as quoted by BSS on Saturday. Earlier, on August 24, 2016 , foreign ministry sources had said that construction was likely to begin on October 10 this year. The tunnel will be constructed with financial and technical assistance from China, while the Bridges Division of the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry will supervise the work. The construction of necessary infrastructure, including residences for Chinese engineers and related employees, has almost been completed, Engineer Kabir said. "The feasibility study and acquisition process for 1,100 acres of land for the tunnel have also been completed," he added.

Narrating the need for electricity to construct the tunnel, he said two Megawatts of electricity had already been managed in this regard. He added that a 15-Megawatt substation will also be set up imminently to ensure construction runs smoothly. The 4-lane tunnel will be 3.5km in length, while the approach road on both sides of the river will be around 6 km. The tunnel will connect the proposed Asian Highway to the Dhaka-Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway. Mahbubul Alam, president of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the tunnel would open a new horizon for trade and commerce in Chittagong, playing a vital role in the overall economic development of the country. He said the tunnel will reduce the distance by-road between Chittagong and Cox's Bazar, also easing the heavy traffic bound for the port-city from Dhaka.
