Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said the government would re-excavate old canals in Dhaka, apart from excavating new ones, for a better water management system.
She made the remark at Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargaon in Dhaka while inaugurating the three-day long Dhaka Water Summit-2017.
The prime minister also said that her government has undertaken an initiative to decrease the dependence on underground water. The project would ensure safe water from surface water sources in the divisional cities by 2021, reports BSS.
“A comprehensive approach is needed to achieve the goal of ensuring safe water and sanitation for every citizen of the country by 2030. This will help us to achieve at least seven other goals of SDGs including SDG-6,” she said.
The Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali and SDG Affairs Chief Coordinator Abul Kalam Azad among others spoke at the programme. Local Government Rural Development and Co-Operatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain also attended among many others.
