Dhaka mayors renew old pledge on waiving FFs' holding tax

Update : 17 Dec 2016, 07:27 PM
The mayors repeated their promises at a reception for freedom fighters organised by the city corporations at Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital on Saturday. The reception was attended by several hundreds of freedom fighters and their families. National Board of Revenue Chairman Md Nojibur Rahman and high officials of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) were present at the event as well. “Your contributions during Liberation War led us to having our identity as an independent nation in the world. We will try our best within our administrative limits to fulfil your demands,” DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq said at the reception. Interestingly, both the mayors made the same promise at the same programme last year, at the same venue, but that pledge has yet to be fulfilled.Freedom fighters and their families attend a reception organised by Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporations at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka on December 17, 2016 Photo: Rajib Dhar Freedom fighters and their families attend a reception organised by Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporations at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka on December 17, 2016 Photo: Rajib DharFreedom fighters have long been asking for a waiver of holding tax, welfare fund for destitute freedom fighters and their families, and designated space in the graveyards in Dhaka for burial. At Saturday's reception, the DNCC mayor also gave assurance that a welfare fund for the living freedom fighters and families of the martyrs would be established. Both the city corporations will make contributions to that fund, he said. The city corporations will preserve spaces in the graveyards for the freedom fighters as well, he added. In his speech, DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon said: “Your sacrifices and contributions during Liberation War is unforgettable. It is a shame for us that you have to ask for what you deserve.” He said it was their duty to ensure that freedom fighters living in Dhaka did not have to pay holding tax. Earlier on December 8 this year, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque said at parliament that the government had decided to waive holding tax on the residences of freedom fighters under all city corporations and municipalities in the country.
