Police are providing security for the rights activist Sultana Kamal after the radical Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam publicly threatened her with violence.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ramna Division and the Detective Branch (DB) have taken joint measures for her safety.

DB South deputy commissioner (acting) Md Shahidullah told the Bangla Tribune on Monday: “Since something like this has happened, we have discussed with Ramna Division officials and talked to Sultana Kamal.
“We asked her if she has seen anything suspicious and requested her to contact us if needed.”

Police said Ramna Division and DB South held a meeting on the matter and Dhanmondi police were instructed to ensure her safety.
Police then contacted her and informed her of the measures taken. She was also asked to contact the police immediately if needed.
A DMP source said DB officials had met the rights activist and asked her about her daily movements. They had assured her of providing security.

Dhanmondi police station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdul Latif told the Bangla Tribune: “We are providing security to her. We are taking this matter seriously.”
She argued with a Hefazat representative that if the group's position was that no religious edifice should be put in the court premises, by the same argument the mosque that is inside the premises should not be there either.

In follow-up to this show, Hefazat’s Vice-President Junayed Al-Habib claimed Sultana Kamal had said “if the statue is not in the country then mosques should not be in the country” and demanded her arrest within 24 hours.
They also threatened her with violence and said she would share the same fate as the exiled author Taslima Nasrin.
