Woman alleges Uber driver assaulted her

Update : 14 Jun 2017, 09:15 AM
An Uber driver has allegedly harassed a woman inside his car while giving her a ride in Dhaka. According to the victim, the driver strangled her neck with his hands and abused her verbally inside the car while passing the Cantonment area on Monday afternoon. The woman told the Bangla Tribune that she had hired the Uber car for a ride to Banani from Mirpur around 4pm. Halfway through the journey, in the Cantonment area, driver Sumon Sarker allegedly suddenly stopped the car and refused to go any further. As the woman threatened to call military police, Sumon restarted the car. When nearly reaching the ECB roundabout, he allegedly grabbed the woman by her shirt’s collar and strangled her. He also used abusive words, the woman claimed. When contacted, Sumon denied the allegation, instead saying the complainant was a drug addict and did not behave herself. Uber authorities have already banned the driver based on the complaint.
