Dhaka residents have been urged to go car free on Friday in observance of World Car Free Day 2017.
The day is celebrated across the world on September 22 to raise awareness about improved public transport system and promoting traffic jam and pollution-free urbanisation.
On the occasion, the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) along with several NGOs have arranged a day-long event at Manik Mia Avenue.
The event is open for all and will feature different fun activities such as drawing competition, cycling, games and a discussion session, according to DTCA's Facebook page.
Meanwhile, Dhaka's cyclists are going to put on a show in solidarity with the World Car Free Day's call to avoid private vehicles.
Sefat-E- Kaniz, founder of Cyclers of Bangladesh and Female Cyclers of Bangladesh, said they were expecting to bring out a big single-file bicycle rally at 8am from Shahbagh intersection.
The rally will end at Manik Mia Avenue.
This year, the slogan of the day is “Go car free and choose your ride: walk, bike or take a bus.”
World Car Free Day is observed in major cities around the world with great enthusiasm and vigor to encourage citizens to avoid using private cars and encourage cycling, walking or using public transport instead.
