Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has decided not to allow worn-out and unfit public transports, especially the buses and minibuses, to run in Dhaka from November 26.
The transport regulatory authority made the decision public by issuing a circular in a national Bangla daily on Thursday.
The BRTA circular reads that the owners have to give a facelift to their decrepit transports and get the unfit ones repaired by November 25.
If the owners do not repair the vehicles in question within the given date, the BRTA would take legal action against them.
Most of the public buses and minibuses are in dilapidated state, which look weird in a megacity like Dhaka, added the circular signed by BRTA Director Engr Md Nurul Islam.
According to sources, a lion's share of the vehicles run on CNG and the gas cylinders are neither well protected nor regularly checked, posing a great threat of explosion.
Moreover, a good number of the buses are seen having broken windshields and some don't even have any seating arrangements for commuters are also found to be very poor.
When contacted, Nurul Islam said: “We have given notice to the transport owners to repair and repaint their vehicles within the November 25 deadline.”
“We will not allow any such vehicle after the deadline and keep an eye on them to enforce our decision strictly,” he added.
