Four Bangladesh Chhatra League men allegedly assaulted two journalists at the Dhaka University campus on Tuesday.
The accused attackers are DU Chhatra League Bijoy Ekattor Hall unit Assistant secretary Ahmed Foysal, Deputy Human Resources Affairs Secretary Tofayel Hossain, and activists Anwarul Kabir and Ashraful Islam Sakib. They are all followers of the unit’s president, Fokir Rasel Ahmed.
The two victims, Masum Billah of bdnews24.com and a female journalist of Channel 24, are former students of DU.
The four accused approached the journalists and asked them to identify themselves around 10:00pm on Tuesday, when the latter were chit-chatting near the Arts Faculty. After the journalists then introduced themselves as former students of the university, the Chhatra League men began an altercation, according to Masum.
“At one stage of the altercation, they attacked and beat us,” Masum said, adding that he managed to catch one of them with the help of another student.
Later, a DU proctorial team captured and handed over the attackers to Shahbagh police station.
Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge of the police station, said they would take action once a complaint is filed.
When contacted, Chhatra League DU unit President Abid Al Hasan said: “We will take necessary disciplinary action against all the accused.”
DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said: “We will take action against the accused attackers as per the university’s rules.”
