The by-election to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) for the mayoral post will take place on February 26.
Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda made the announcement during a briefing at Dhaka’s Nirbachon Bhaban (Election Building) on Thursday afternoon.
The post of the DNCC mayor fell vacant after the incumbent Annisul Huq died of a blood vessel disease at a London hospital on November 30, 2017.
On December 1, the government’s Local Government Division declared the post as vacant. After the meeting, Election Commission acting secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said the schedule of the by-election would be declared on January 9.
The voting will be held in 36 new wards including in the DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on the same day, he said.
Helaluddin further said the polls schedule of 36 new wards and reserved seats would also be announced on January 9. He said the Election Commission had yet to decide whether the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) to be used instead of ballot paper in the polls.
The aspirants of the election, he said, will have to remove their displayed posters and banners by Saturday midnight, otherwise they will face legal action.
The commission has already issued directive for the authority concerned to this end, he added.
The meeting also decided to hold the by-elections to Gaibandha-1 and Brahamanbaria-1 constituencies on March 13. The schedule of those by-elections will be announced on February 5, Helaluddin added.
Awami League lawmaker Golam Mostafa of Gaibandha-1 constituency died in a road accident on December 19, and Sayedul Haque of Brahamanbaria-1 died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on December 16.
