Indian preacher Maulana Muhammad Saad Khandhalvi will not go to the Bishwa Ijtema ground in Tongi, and will return to his country at a time of his convenience. After a two-hour long meeting with Tabligh Jamaat factions who have been at odds over the controversial preacher's presence in the country for Ijtema, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal also informed reporters that both sides also agreed that the preacher is going to stay at Kakrail Mosque during the Ijtema, which is going to be held on January 12-14 in Tongi. The meeting with the Tabligh leaders and Qawmi scholars was held at the Home Ministry conference room on Thursday afternoon. The minister also mentioned that the government had never intervened in the matters of Ijtema, and will not do so this time as well. All types of securities will be ensured like it was in the previous occasions, he added. Qawmi Madrasa Education Board (Befaq) Vice President Mawlana Ashraf Ali, its Joint Secretary Mawlana Mahfuzul Haque, Pir Saheb Principal Mizanur Rahman from Kapasia, Gazipur and Syed Wasif Islam, one of the ameers and also a Majlis-e-Shura member of Tabligh Jamaat, Bangladesh were present at the meeting.

Earlier on Wednesday, hundreds of members of the Islamic movement named Tabligh Jamaat and some Qawmi madrasa alems [clerics] positioned themselves near Airport Road in Dhaka, chanting slogans against the arrival of Maulana Saad. Some of the protesters said Tabligh Jamaat members in India and Bangladesh have been opposing the visit of Maulana Saad as Darul Uloom Deoband, the movement’s central seminary, has been maintaining a state of non-cooperation with him. Maulana Saad, however, is also a religious leader known for making controversial statements which have caused uproar in India on several occasions. Despite the protest, he reached the local Tabligh headquarters without hindrance. The article was originally published in Bangla Tribune.
