Ekushey Book Fair: New writers make their mark
This year’s Ekushey Book Fair continues to provide new writers with the inspiration and platform to launch and showcase their books. Shelly Zaman Khan, an avid fan of Rabindranath Tagore and resident of the United States for the past 16 years, wrote a book on Kadambari – spouse of Rabindranath Tagore – simply focusing on the subject’s impact on Tagore’s literature. This is the writer’s first book. “Every year, I planned to write a book in time for the Amar Ekushey Book Fair, but never managed to do so. Finally, I did it this year,” Shelly said. “Since my school life, I have been a fan of Tagore’s literature, and I have seen how it centres around Kadambari. I could just sense the chemistry between Tagore and Kadambari,” she added. “The Ekushey Book Fair is the best inspiration for someone who loves literature and wants to publish a new book,” she added. Shelly’s book “Ami Kadambari” has been launched at the fair from Palolik Shourav publications, already drawing attention from readers. In addition to Shelly, several new writers have launched books in the last two weeks, generating a toll list for the writers. “The fair gives new writers the opportunity to attract the attention of booklovers and also generate greater revenue for the publishers,” said Majedul Hasan Payel, publisher of the Joyati Prakashani, a renowned publication house. “It is very challenging for new writers to publish their first book. But we always encourage them,” he added. “The book fair is the best platform for the publishers, writers, and readers. It sustains and invigorates the country’s literature,” said Chandan Chawdhury, publisher of Behula Bangla publishing house. Behula Bangla published young author Nizamul Haque Bipul’s first publication “Kuakata Theke Marrakesh,” a travel story featuring the natural beauty and notable historical-cultural places in Africa, Europe, and Bangladesh. Journalist Bipul said: “I work at a newspaper and never wanted to become an author. But Ekushey Boi Mela has always inspired me to step up my game.” Manjur H, a promising writer whose fifth book was published from Kakali Publication, said: “My writing helps readers use psychological tools to take the right decision at the right time. It is very important for career development.” Agami Prakasjhani’s publisher Osman Gani said: “The number of new writers is satisfactory and has seen a spike during the book fair.”
