Monowar Hossain is a fresh graduate from the National University and is thinking about ways to improve his vocabulary for the job recruitment exams awaiting him. One of his picks at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair on Sunday was the “Bangla Academy Bengali to English Dictionary.”
The other book he bought from Bangla Academy’s book stall at the fair was “Bangla Academy Standard Bangla Spelling Rules.”
Monowar said: “Bangla Academy’s dictionaries are easy to use and have fewer flaws than other options. It is necessary to follow Bangla Academy dictionaries when one needs to learn new words.”
Kalyan Pran, an honours fourth-year student, said: “Bangla Academy dictionaries are trustworthy, and also cheaper than other dictionaries on the market.”
He bought three books including two dictionaries from Bangla Academy’s book stall.
As in past years, Bangla Academy’s dictionaries have so far been the highest selling category in the current edition of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair.
Zakir Hossain, a staff member at Bangla Academy Book Sales Centre, told the Dhaka Tribune that the demand for he dictionaries is always high during the book fair.
Usually job seekers, writers, and researchers buy those dictionaries, he added.
Dr Jalal Ahmed, director of Bangla Academy and member secretary of the book fair management committee, reported that they have sold at least 1,000 dictionaries a day since the fair began on February 1.
“The demand for these dictionaries is increasing day by day. Each and every educated person is habituated with these dictionaries and loves it,” he said.
The Bangla Academy director also mentioned that since the establishment of the Academy in 1955, it has published more than 5,000 books and the most important of those publications are the dictionaries.
The first major accomplishment of the Academy was the “Dictionary of Local Bengali Dialects,” first published in 1965.
According to poet Russell Ashequi, Bangla Academy’s dictionaries hold special importance among academics and writers.
Bangla Academy Director General Dr Shamsuzzaman Khan said: “Bangla Academy has produced several dictionaries, and the high standards they maintain are a result of years of efforts.”
